Those who know me well know that there aren’t many things I love more than my hot drinks. As soon as September rolls around, I’m a sucker for my daily dose (let’s be honest, doses) of hot tea, tea lattes, and ciders. They’re certainly a requirement of colder months, but if you’re like me, they make any day cozier year-round.
Before my health started to decline, I’d tear open a packet of hot chocolate or pick up a Starbucks latte without paying much mind to what was in those drinks—the sugar, the caffeine, or the additives. But since I’ve started to be more mindful of how I fuel my body, and since I’ve shifted my focus to all-around wellness, those drinks were one of the first things to go. Of course, nothing’s wrong with an occasional treat, but for my daily hot drink staples, I needed to find a different way.
One of my new favorites is a hot, slightly-sweet, homemade turmeric latte. And the benefits of this drink go far beyond its being free of cane sugar, caffeine, and other artificial ingredients. Turmeric, which has been used medicinally for centuries, packs some incredible health benefits to this treat. It’s a potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, which makes it a powerful player against pain and inflammation as well as chronic diseases—from cancer to autoimmune disease, from heart disease to arthritis. Turmeric may also boost memory, mood, and relaxation. I like to drink it before bed as a natural aid in winding down my mind and my body for sleep.
This yellow cup of tea also satisfies that little sweet craving, but is uses a dash of maple syrup as its sweetener, which—unlike refined white sugar, which has no nutritional value whatsoever—provides some healthy minerals and has a lower glycemic index. Using 100% pure maple syrup is my favorite natural way to sweeten drinks, desserts, and baked goods when needed.
I hope you’ll join me for tea time and try brewing up your own turmeric latte. You won’t regret it!
Cozy Turmeric Latte
Recipe yields one 12 oz mug.
12 oz unsweetened dairy-free milk of choice (I use original almond milk)
2 tsp 100% pure maple syrup
1 tsp turmeric powder
½ tsp ground cinnamon
¼ tsp ground cardamom
¼ tsp ground ginger
Pinch of nutmeg
Pinch of black pepper
1. Heat non-dairy milk + maple syrup in a small saucepan over low heat.
2. Meanwhile, stir spices together in the bottom of your mug of choice.
3. Add a spoonful or two of boiling water to the mug with spices, stir until all spices are dissolved.
4. When milk is hot, pour into your mug with the spice blend, stir well, and enjoy.
